Up to 20 students in Ghana have died in an accident after trees fell while they were swimming at a prevalent visitor magnificence spot, crisis authorities said.
Ghana national fire benefit representative Ruler Billy Anaglate said the "strange occurrence" occurred on Sunday evening, when a gathering of secondary school understudies were swimming at the Kintampo waterfalls, the most noteworthy waterfall in the nation, in the Brong-Ahafo locale.
Anaglate said that a tempest made trees topple and fall on the adolescents while they were in the water.
"They were swimming in the waterway when there was a tempest, a blustery environment that had removed a portion of the trees, and they had fallen on some of them – the individuals who were evidently swimming," Anaglate said.
Eighteen understudies kicked the bucket at the scene while two others passed on in healing facility, Anaglate stated, including that 11 more were accepting treatment for wounds, including one of the school heads accountable for the outing.
A witness revealed to Ghana's Starr News radio: "A tremendous tree fell at the top when the downpours started and smashed the revelers. The greater part of them are understudies of the Wenchi senior secondary school. Others are voyagers. We are attempting to spare the individuals who are caught by cutting the trees with cutting apparatuses."
The nation's tourism serve, Catherine Abelema Afeku, said in an announcement: "We extend our sympathies to the groups of the dead and appeal to God for the harmed."
The Kintampo waterfalls are encompassed by forest and are situated on the Pumpum waterway, a tributary of the Dark Volta.
